APACS Standards - PIN Mailer Security Accreditation Scheme

APACS has published security standards for bank card PIN mailers used in the UK, and operates an accreditation scheme for PIN mailer stationery and PIN mailer printing services. (PIN mailers are used for the delivery by mail of Personal Identification Numbers to cardholders.)

The aim of the scheme is to ensure that PIN mailers are adequately secure. The first versions of the standards primarily address the PIN mailer product itself. The objectives are to ensure that the PIN is not visible until it is revealed by the cardholder, and that any tampering with the mailer in order to discover the PIN will be evident to the cardholder. APACS may extend the standards in future to address the processes and procedures involved, if necessary.

External laboratories are used for evaluating PIN mailer products and services. APACS will appoint laboratories subject to certain criteria: such as by their having a demonstrable track record in the testing of secure documents.

APACS accredits suppliers who meet the scheme's requirements and whose products and services are successfully evaluated. Please click on the link on the right of this page for a list of accredited suppliers, products and services.

Suppliers can make enquiries by emailing pinmailer@apacs.org.uk. The PIN mailer standards are available from the APACS Standards Unit.
